Nisha, une jeune Indienne, a grandi dans le nord du pays avec son frère jumeau Amil, et leur père hindou. Les enfants n'ont pas connu leur mère musulmane. Ils sont entourés de leur grand-mère et de Kazi, leur cuisinier musulman. Depuis peu, on parle de l'indépendance du pays. Nehru, Gandhi et la classe dirigeante disent que le peuple va se libérer de la domination britannique. Mais on entend aussi dire que musulmans et hindous ne pourront plus coexister.
Nisha et sa famille vont devoir s'exiler à Jodhpur, mais que va devenir Kazi ? Nisha se sent elle-même à moitié musulmane et hindoue. Comment l'indépendance peut-elle signifier la liberté ? Nisha entame une correspondance fictive avec sa mère, à qui elle raconte les événements, mais aussi à qui elle confie ses questionnements. Les tensions montent entre musulmans et hindous. Une violence de moins en moins contenue s'exprime à l'école, sur le marché, dans les transports...
Il faut partir, mais sur la route, la confusion règne. Au terme de leur exil, après avoir traversé mille dangers, Nisha et sa famille arrivent dans l'Inde nouvelle, où ils entament une seconde vie. Un jour, un homme les attend devant leur porte... C'est Kazi ! Ce texte sur une des pages sombres de l'histoire parvient à mêler des éléments de la vie quotidienne indienne ; la description des repas ajoute une saveur toute particulière au roman.
Les questionnements de Nisha sur l'identité, la frontière, la religion, l'amour de son pays et la force de l'écriture apportent une profondeur, une intensité et une résonance uniques pour les lecteurs d'aujourd'hui. Durant les journées du 14 et 15 août 1947, l'Inde obtient son indépendance vis-à-vis de la Grande-Bretagne. La Partition entre Inde et Pakistan intervient après des siècles de tensions religieuses, même si beaucoup ne souhaitent pas une séparation en deux pays.
Durant le passage des frontières, des tensions éclatent dans des régions jusque-là paisibles : plus de 14 millions de gens s'exilent et au moins 1 million d'entre eux sont tués. C'est la plus grande migration de masse de l'histoire. Des tensions demeurent aujourd'hui, entre certains groupes d'hindous et de musulmans. Garder en mémoire les erreurs du passé peut créer un avenir plus pacifique : accepter la différence a toujours été un grand défi pour l'humanité, un défi qui s'est manifesté de mille façons.

RD Laing presented madness as a voyage of discovery that could open out onto a free state of higher consciousness, or hypersanity. But if there is such a thing as hypersanity, then mere sanity is not all it’s cracked up to be, a state of dormancy and dullness with less vital potential even than madness. We could all go mad, in a way we already are, minus the promise. But what if there was another route to hypersanity, one which, compared to madness, was less fearsome, less dangerous, and less damaging? What if, as well as a backdoor way, there was also a royal road strewn with petals and sprayed with perfume? This is a book about thinking, which, astonishingly, is barely taught in formal education. Our culture mostly equates thinking with logical reasoning, and the first few chapters examine logic, reason, their forms, and their flaws, starting with the basics of argumentation. But thinking is also about much more than logical reasoning, and so the book broadens out to examine concepts such as intelligence, knowledge, and truth, and alternative forms of cognition that our culture tends to overlook and underplay, including intuition, emotion, and imagination. If Hypersanity fails to live up to its tall promise, it should at least make you into a better thinker. And so you can approach the book as an opportunity to hone your thinking skills, which, in the end, are going to be far more important to your impact and wellbeing than any facts that you could ever learn. As BF Skinner once put it, ‘Education is what survives when what has been learnt has been forgotten.’
